Germany reach Euro 2024 knockout stages with victory over Hungary

Musiala and Gundogan on target as Germany impress

Germany became the first nation to reach the last 16 at Euro 2024 as goals from Jamal Musiala and Ilkay Gundogan secured a 2-0 victory over Hungary in Budapest on Wednesday.

Musiala gave Germany the lead in the 23rd minute, finishing off a fine move involving Thomas Muller and Gundogan. Gundogan had set that up and got on the scoresheet himself in the second half, converting a penalty after Leroy Sane had been fouled in the area. Musiala had netted Germany's second goal in the 5-1 victory over Portugal on Saturday, and the Bayern Munich forward was once again in impressive form against Hungary. He was a constant threat to the Hungarian defence, and his goal was a just reward for his performance. Gundogan was also excellent for Germany, and his penalty was expertly taken. The Manchester City midfielder has been in fine form for his club this season, and he is now showing that he can also be a key player for his country. Hungary had their chances in the game, but they were unable to find a way past Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Dominik Szoboszlai looks disappointed - the Hungary captain may reflect on the chances his side missed with Barnabas Vargas second half. Euro 2024 continued on Wednesday as Germany 2-0-0 beat Hungary 0-0-2 in Group A 2-0 to advance to the knockout stage.
